Skinners’ in the Community

Based in the regenerating area of Woodberry Down, North Hackney, Skinners’ Academy is committed to playing a significant role at the heart of the local community.

Skinners’ Academy works closely with the local community and businesses supporting our Academy’s specialist aim. The overriding aim of the specialist area is to provide a platform for the Academy to become an educational institution that is considered both outstanding in its teaching and learning and performance.

The specialism has become both an integral part of the curriculum and focal point for innovation. Some of the businesses that we currently work with in enterprise include:

BBC News School Report, Mosaic, Enabling Enterprise, The Brokerage, Enterprise Education Trust – Achievers  International, Freedom Charity, Global Enterprise Week Network, Hackney Council, Woodberry Down Regeneration – Berkeley Homes, Manor House Development Trust and Genesis Housing Group

Business and community partnerships give unique opportunities for pupils to gain an insight into the business world, enhance their employability skills and provide an opportunity to boost their confidence. Pupils have also been given the opportunity to work with and support local community projects. These include:

  • Berkley Homes Park Project – Pupils worked with Berkley Homes and designed a park that will be located on Woodberry Grove near the school.
  • Freedom Charity – Pupils have been working with the charity to support the campaign against forced marriages.

Sam and Ruby’s Olympic Adventure

Skinners’ Academy pupils were among the Hackney schoolchildren who joined forces with an award winning children’s author to write and publish a story inspired by the Olympics.

‘Sam and Ruby’s Olympic Adventure’, by Hackney school children and Tony Bradman, follows two children as they journey back through time to learn more about the history of the Olympics. The paperback book was launched on Wednesday 18 April, to mark 100 days to go to the Olympics, and copies are available in bookshops and libraries across the country. Interest has been so high that the book has already sold out and publishers Barrington Stoke have had to do a reprint.
