Dear Parents/Carers and Pupils,
A very warm welcome to all of our new pupils in year 7 and new students in the sixth from, and an equally warm welcome back to all our pupils and students from last year. I hope that everyone managed to have a happy and relaxing summer and comes to the Academy refreshed for another very successful and happy year.
As always at the start of another academic year, we welcome new colleagues, teaching and non-teaching, who join the Academy staff. I hope they will settle in straight away and quickly feel valued members of our very happy, successful and friendly community.

Parental and Pupil Engagement
Mrs Bowling has been appointed to develop links between the Academy and our parents as well as to develop additional ideas for engaging pupils more in the life of the Academy.
Show My Homework
Skinners’ Academy uses Show My Homework to communicate homework to pupils and parents. All pupils already have a login and this term, parents will be issued with a PIN to allow them to login and check what homework has been set for their child. SMHW is also available via free apps for Android and Apple mobiles and this again will let parents see what has been set. You can also see all the homework set for the whole school via links on the Skinners’ website. Pupils will continue to use their Planners to write down homework.
Public Examination Results
As always, the public examination results were eagerly awaited. This year we received our first A Level results, and were not disappointed. There was a 100% pass rate in all subjects bar three, and, most impressively, of the 46 students who applied to university, 45 gained places. Not only is Esin, last year’s Head Girl, able to take up a place to read history at Oxford (recently voted the best university in the world) but many other former students will be taking up places at other top universities including London, Leeds, Exeter, Leicester, UEA, Brunel and many more.
At GCSE level our pass rate was significantly above the national average and there was a 100% pass rate in art, biology, chemistry, physics and further maths. The pass rate in Spanish 97%, in French was 87%, and in PE 83%. Our top pupil was Selen Sucu who achieved eight A*/9 grades and three A grades. As always, however, our motto is, “Be the best you can”, and it was tremendous to see so many pupils fulfilling and outperforming their targets at all levels.
Hearty congratulations to everyone and my sincere thanks to the staff for their continued dedication and commitment.
Parent / Carer Governor
As mentioned last term, we now have a vacancy for a parent governor. If we have more than one applicant then a parent election will be arranged. To be eligible, you must have a son or daughter in the Academy at the time of applying. Governors play a vital part in the strategic development of the Academy. The position is not especially onerous but does require attendance at about ten meetings per year (usually in the evening). There is also one governors’ training day each year. Should anyone be interested in this role, please feel free to contact to me as soon as possible via firstname.lastname@example.org.
Could I please remind every pupil that it is his/her responsibility to ensure that all equipment (e.g. PE kit, uniform etc.) and homework is brought to the Academy as and when required. Every pupil is provided with a planner so there should be no excuse for forgetting to bring relevant things.
Could I also please remind parents that should your son/daughter forget something, it cannot be accepted by reception and passed on to pupils; reception is always extremely busy and simply does not have the time or the staff to deliver equipment to pupils around the Academy site. I am afraid, therefore, that no equipment etc. will be accepted by reception.
Music for all
I am delighted to announce that once again, all pupils in Year 7 will be provided with a musical instrument and with free music lessons. The music department plays a vibrant and dynamic role in the life of the Academy and this new development brings the benefits of learning an instrument to all new pupils. The project has been funded by an external music charity and also by the governors of the Academy, to whom we are extremely grateful. My thanks also to Ms Adediran and the Music Department for masterminding this fantastic opportunity for all Year 7 pupils.
Can I please remind all parents and pupils that mobile ‘phones are completely banned for all pupils (with the exception of the sixth form). This has been a rule since the Academy opened in 2010 and will be rigidly enforced. We have banned phones for two reasons: they can cause bullying and other issues in school and, secondly, the Metropolitan Police has found that 80% of muggings and attacks on young people have been in order to steal phones. Hopefully, because Skinners’ pupils will not be carrying money or phones, they will not become targets. Please ensure your son/daughter does not bring a phone to the Academy; any phone will be automatically confiscated for as long as the Academy deems fit, and the pupil will receive a Saturday detention.
As all parents and pupils from last year will remember, at the end of last term we had a problem with some glass panels in the Academy. I am delighted to report that over the six-week holiday every panel in the building was checked and made safe. My apologies for the disruption that this caused last term and my thanks for your forbearance; as always, however, the safety of all members of the Academy comes first.

With very best wishes to everyone,
Mr Tim Clark, Principal
