Skinners’ Academy was delighted to be able to offer a once-in-a-lifetime trip for some of our Year 10 students to go gliding. This was an exciting opportunity facilitated by the Worshipful Company of Air Pilots’ Youth Gliding Scheme. The trip was organised as a reward for those students in Year 10 who had shown an exceptional commitment to their Key Stage 4 studies. The following article was written by two of the students who attended the trip, Angelina and Tiayan:

On Tuesday the 24th of June, eleven year 10 students had the amazing opportunity of attending the London Gliding School, thanks to the Air Pilots Youth Gliding Scheme.

This trip enabled students to learn flying techniques, develop teamwork plus decision making and understand more about a career in aviation. Despite the tough weather conditions, these students still had the best time of their lives and although some students felt very nervous about flying, they still gave it their best shot and ended up enjoying themselves. They also experienced the wonder of soaring over the Dunstable downs, Milton Keynes and the Whipsnade white lion.

The instructors were very nice and created a comfortable learning environment helping students build confidence in their skills. These role models encouraged students to consider a future in aviation and their nurturing abilities made students very knowledgeable about flying and took them out of their comfort zones.

These year 10 students are very grateful for this amazing opportunity created by Ms Jacob and they are very thankful to Ms Bell and Ms Antwi for taking them. Both these teachers had an amazing time and is a day that they will all never forget. This opportunity opened up so many doors for these student’s futures and they are forever grateful.
