We are incredibly proud of our Year 11 student, Chris, whose powerful spoken word piece has been published by the Duke of Edinburgh Award (DofE) and shared with a national audience.

This Black History Month, we are especially pleased to highlight Chris’ achievement. In his moving piece, titled “The Compass in your Heart”, Chris shares his journey of camping and hiking for the first time, and the pride of completing his DofE expedition. His words reflect on the challenges he faced, his cultural heritage, and the confidence he discovered through this experience.

The DofE has featured Chris’ story on their website, you can read the full article here.

Mr Legge, the DofE Lead at Skinners’ Academy, said: “I’ve guided nearly 1,000 students through the DofE Award, and every student’s story is different. Even after 10 years, I’m still inspired each year by the creativity and determination they show. Chris’ spoken word piece beautifully captures how the Award can shape confidence and identity, and I couldn’t be prouder to see his voice recognised nationally.”

We are delighted to see Chris’ talent and hard work recognised on such a platform. Congratulations, Chris, on this fantastic achievement!

“Through this journey, I’ve realised how important it is to be proud of who you are and where you come from. Spoken word has given me the chance to share my story and connect with others in a meaningful way.” – Chris
