Over the last academic year, a group of students from years 8, 9, and 10 have gathered for biweekly meetings where we discussed ideas on how to raise interest in literacy.
In order to show how vital reading is, we held multiple year group assemblies to explain the importance of it and to also introduce ourselves as Hackney Reading Champions. In the Winter Term, we held and organised a book swap, a blind book date, introduced a book of the month system where students can view a plethora of highly recommended books, video called other schools to gain their insight on literacy and collaboratively work together.
During the Spring Term we ran the Scholastic Book Fair, organised a writer workshop for the whole year group including free books that students could keep. In the summer term, we consistently updated the Book of the Month to keep interest high!
In addition, we also went to Hackney Town Hall where we met the Mayor of Hackney who presented us with a Hackney Reading Champions Gold Award for all our hard work.
Overall, we hope that we improved reading throughout our school and made a lasting change for the better.
