Students were given a unique opportunity to hear firsthand about life in politics during a recent visit from Baroness Carmen Smith. Speaking to both Year 7 pupils and sixth form students studying politics, Baroness Smith shared her experiences in Parliament as well as her personal journey growing up on a council estate in Wales.

Year 7 students were eager to engage, asking a wide range of questions about her role in the House of Lords, her daily responsibilities, and the challenges she has faced throughout her career. Baroness Smith spoke openly about her upbringing and how it shaped her path into public service, offering an inspiring message about determination and opportunity.

With the sixth form students, the discussion took on a more advanced tone, as they posed complex questions about legislation, political processes, and the role of the House of Lords. Baroness Smith provided detailed answers and invaluable personal insights, helping students deepen their understanding of how politics works in practice.

Head Student Pedro reflected on the visit, saying:

“I found the talk fascinating - it really highlighted how important the House of Lords is in scrutinising legislation and holding the government to account. Hearing that perspective directly from someone working within it made it much more real.”

The visit was both engaging and informative, leaving students across all year groups with a greater appreciation of politics and the impact of public service.
