Several of our talented Year 9 students recently travelled to the University of Cambridge to take part in the prestigious First Story Young Writers Festival 2026, joining 284 young writers from schools across England for a day dedicated to creativity, confidence and literary excellence.

Hosted within the University of Cambridge's Faculty of English, the festival provided students with a unique opportunity to experience university life while developing their writing skills alongside aspiring young authors from around the country.

The event opened with inspiring talks from First Story writer Adam Z. Robinson, First Story alumna Sarah Zahman, and Dr Bonnie Lander-Johnson, Fellow of Downing College, who introduced students to the opportunities available at Cambridge University.

A highlight of the day was a special session with award-winning author A. M. Dassu, whose acclaimed books have received national and international recognition. Students also participated in two creative writing workshops led by professional writers in a range of impressive university settings.

During lunchtime, our students enjoyed guided tours of Newnham and Selwyn Colleges led by student ambassadors, offering valuable insight into university life and higher education pathways. They also explored the festival expo, which included a bookstall, collaborative poetry activities and a book signing with A. M. Dassu.

The festival concluded with the Young Writers Showcase, where students from across the country bravely shared their work with the audience. The day celebrated the power of storytelling, creativity and self-expression.

We are incredibly proud of our Year 9 students for representing the school so positively and for embracing this enriching opportunity.
